Facebook to Offer Custom URL’s

I hadn’t been on Facebook primarily to keep my personal identity separate from other ones (read about my online identity crisis), but Dan Schawbel from the Personal Branding Blog had a post yesterday afternoon announcing that Facebook will be offering custom URL’s (read the entire post here).

For those who want to be found and have page rank.  This is big.

Facebook is the leading social media site with over 200 million users worldwide.

To date, users had no control over their profile URL name.  LinkedIn did, and I got a nice URL:  http://www.linkedin.com/in/nunamaker

To get your Facebook URL on Saturday visit:  http://www.facebook.com/username/

As Schawbel points out, people use search to find everything and a URL with the words facebook.com and your full name will help people find you.  Further, the custom URL’s will be available for fan pages which is critically important for businesses and products.

The catch?  The page needs 1000 fans to qualify for a custom URL.

So, I’m off to try to capture 1000 contacts for the fan page I’m launching today.
